Common Sense isn’t so common. I have several red neck friends who live in trailers, drive older model pickup trucks and work at jobs making below poverty level and they often tell me they believe that everyone should pay the same percentage of their wages in taxes. If they pay 10% they think the super rich should only have to pay 10%.
I once felt this way until I actually thought about it. First of all, contrary to what we are told about the income tax amendment, if one researches how this became law, they will find that it was sold to the American people as a tax on the super rich. Low income and middle income Americans were not suppose to have their income tax but FDR asked the American people to allow our government to tax their income to win the war with a promise after the war was won the tax would return to be a tax on the super rich. It was never the intent of the income tax amendment to be applied equally to all income earners but that isn’t the main reason I changed my mind. After thinking about this it occurs to me that the wealthy should pay more because their wealth gives them greater access to government. Take one of my red neck buddies. If he arrived in Washington and went to our representative’s office and asked to meet with him do you think he would get in? If one of the Waltons, or Hunts, or Tysons went to the same office not only would they get in, they would go to lunch and their desires would have much greater chance of becoming law. The rich should pay for this access and that is why they should pay more in taxes. That is common sense.
