It seems we are to accept without proof that Social Security is in trouble and will go broke. That is what most national politicians have talked about for years. But is true?
First of all, when was the last time our government got anything right? They were wrong about Vietnam, today we trade and travel to Vietnam. Our government was certainly wrong about Iraq, there were no weapons of mass destruction. Our government was wrong about Afghanistan, that war is far from being won, probably never will be. Lets see, there was Katrina, our government said they were prepared and we got to see first hand one of the largest failures of Bush administration. Bird flu didn’t happen, and the strong Bush economic plan took a nose dive in the last year he was in office which should cause a lot of Republicans to wonder if anything their party says is factual or just smoke and mirrors.
So where is the credibility to believe that anyone really knows what will happen when the baby boomers load up Social Security? To listen to the politicians one would think the retirees are going to go out into their backyards and burn their money, but the fact is that is not what they will do. They will spend it; many will spend every penny they get from Social Security.
Now I can’t every remember getting a check from the government until the Bush administration sent out their stimulus checks in the fall of 2001, so how is it that check that the Bush administration sent was good for our economy and the checks going out for Social Security is bad? If the goal is to get money in the pockets of Americans to boost our economy imagine what a boost those additional social security checks are going to make? Retirees will be spending like there is no tomorrow and at their age that can become true, and they will be creating jobs for tax paying Americans so I have no confidence in anything a government official or politician says about Social Security. This could turn out to be the best thing going for America and frankly I think that is what many who are anti Social Security fear the most.
